LAKE KAGAWONG鈥擳hanks to the efforts of the Gore Bay Fish and Game Club (GBFGC) and its many supporters, Lake Kagawong received 6,154 healthy walleye fingerlings on August 15.
Once again, this year, club volunteers, over the past 52 consecutive days nurtured tiny 0.2 gram summer pond fingerlings to a 7.02 gram average weight (or 3-4 inch length).
鈥淭hese much larger young walleye will virtually guarantee a better chance of survival for these fish so they can reach maturity,鈥� said GBFGC club secretary Ian Anderson.
Mr. Anderson explained, 鈥渆xpansion of this fishery is our long-term goal. It has taken a lot of help from many to reach this successful stocking day in 2024.鈥�
The volunteers who, over the summer months took time to daily monitor and feed the fish, along with cleaning equipment so the fish stayed healthy and grew, included: Randy German, Paul Leclair, Paul Soucie, Doug Knechtel, Doug Weddle, Pat Leveille, Gordon Brown and Barry Wall.
The GBFGC would also like to acknowledge the Blue Jay Hatchery staff and manager for supplying the initial fish to rear and for their ongoing advice and the Sudbury Ministry of Natural Resources and Fisheries (MNRF) office for their stocking approval as well as the townships of Billings and Gordon/Barrie Island which made financial contributions to the program. The town of Gore Bay had previously donated their hatchery building to the GBFGC and have provided ongoing long-term administration support.
鈥淥ur club alone could not do this without all of their help,鈥� said Mr. Anderson.
